Blackwell Library begins America 250 Displays
April 28, 2026
The Blackwell Public Library is joining in a nationwide celebration with the launch of its “America 250” displays, which will be featured throughout the summer in honor of the United States’ upcoming 250th birthday.
The displays highlight a variety of themes, including local history, key eras in American history presented through historical fiction, and young adult coming-of-age novels designed to engage younger readers.
“We are extremely lucky to be supported by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, which has an America 250 programming guide that Oklahoma libraries are encouraged to use for resources and ideas,” said Director of Operations Talyn Spence.
Spence added that additional displays and activities are planned in the coming months, many of which will align with the library’s annual Summer Reading Program.
Blackwell Head Librarian Charles Gerian recently represented the community at the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ America 250 Rural Libraries Convening, held in Phoenix, Arizona. The event brought together librarians from across several states, including Oklahoma, Kansas, Arizona, California, and New Mexico, to collaborate and share ideas tied to the America 250 initiative.
The convening focused on helping rural libraries develop programming and outreach efforts for the national celebration. Among the speakers was Oklahoma Department of Libraries consultant Courtney Rutledge, who presented the state’s America 250 programming guide as a resource for libraries across Oklahoma.
A healthy Kay County requires great community news.
