Blackwell Walmart Celebrates 50 Years; Leierer retires
May 13, 2026
Walmart Store 136 celebrated a major milestone this week as community members, city officials, employees and local organizations gathered to recognize the store’s 50 years of service to Blackwell.
The anniversary celebration honored the store’s long history in the community and highlighted its impact on local families and the economy since opening in 1976.
The event brought together Walmart leadership, City of Blackwell administrative and department staff, Blackwell Chamber of Commerce members, current employees and former associates. The Blackwell High School and Middle School bands also performed during the celebration.
City Manager Jerry Wieland reflected on the significance of the milestone and Walmart’s role in the community over the past five decades.
“There are a lot of memories here,” Wieland said. “I grew up here and always thought this was the best place in town. Walmart has provided so many jobs for this community — from long-term careers to opportunities for high school students just getting started. We appreciate the dedication to Blackwell, and we wish them another 50 years.”
Wieland also thanked Walmart for its continued investment in Blackwell, including the store’s $3.1 million remodel and grand re-opening completed in 2023.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the presentation of the “People Lead of the Year” award to Susan Stafford. Stafford has been part of the Blackwell Walmart family for all but four of the store’s 50 years and has served as People Lead for more than 20 years, making a lasting impact on employees and customers alike.
The event also included a symbolic ribbon cutting ceremony representing Walmart’s next chapter in Blackwell. The ceremony was led by Tina Leierer, who retired last Friday after 21 years with the store.
Throughout the celebration, speakers and attendees reflected on Walmart’s longstanding presence in Blackwell and its continued role as a major employer and community partner.
Store representatives thanked the community for its support over the years and expressed optimism for the future as Walmart Store 136 begins its next 50 years serving Blackwell and the surrounding area.
A healthy Kay County requires great community news.
