Newkirk FFA Members Help Carry Nation’s Largest Legal American Flag at Rodeo Opening Ceremony
June 18, 2026
Members of the Newkirk FFA Chapter recently participated in a patriotic display during the opening ceremonies of the 101 Wild West Rodeo, helping carry what organizers describe as the largest legal American flag in the United States.
Newkirk students were joined by members of the Tonkawa FFA and Ponca City FFA chapters, as well as Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, Oklahoma City Thunder cheerleaders and numerous volunteers during the ceremony, which also celebrated the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
The massive flag weighs approximately 300 pounds while packed in its storage container. Once unfurled inside the rodeo arena, however, wind resistance and aerodynamics significantly increase the effort required to carry and maneuver it, with participants estimating it feels closer to 3,000 pounds.
Newkirk FFA leaders said the opportunity provided students with a memorable experience while allowing them to represent their school and community on a large stage.
The chapter expressed appreciation to Shawndra Sheik and the 101 Wild West Rodeo Board of Directors for extending the invitation to participate in the annual tradition.
FFA members noted that experiences such as the rodeo ceremony demonstrate the organization's broader mission beyond agriculture, emphasizing leadership, service, patriotism and community involvement.
The 101 Wild West Rodeo, one of Oklahoma’s longest-running rodeo events, attracts competitors and spectators from across the region each year and is known for incorporating patriotic tributes into its opening ceremonies.
A healthy Kay County requires great community news.
